Objectives

The module aims to develop:
- skills in sourcing, selecting and prioritising Chinese or Japanese resources most relevant to their specific area of research;
- greater awareness of translation issues involved in Chinese-English or Japanese-English translation and practical strategies for resolving these;
- extensive and intensive reading skills of specialised Chinese or Japanese;
- skills in producing critical summaries and translations of relevant texts and reviews of the literature;
- the ability to critically assess relevant specialised texts and discuss them within the broader context of the subject.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to identify and select specialised Chinese or Japanese texts relevant to their own area of research and read both extensively and intensively. They should demonstrate a nuanced understanding of the texts and be able to discuss and critically analyse the subject matter and arguments contained therein. They should be able to produce summaries and/or translations of a selection of academic texts.

Syllabus

This module provides students with the opportunity to self-select texts relevant to their specific area of research and read both extensively and intensively. Students will be encouraged to choose key texts (either in the social sciences or arts and humanities) which they will be expected to discuss and analyse with their supervisor. The emphasis is on independent learning, and students will be developing a portfolio to showcase their abilities to engage critically with Chinese or Japanese language specialised texts in their chosen field of specialisation.
