Objectives

This module aims to engage students in developing a detailed understanding of the global electronics industry and assist them with their career plans. The topic of the dissertation is to be agreed with the Module Leader, with examples being an essay on a particular aspect of the electronics industry, a proposal for research funding, a business plan, or a manufacturing/outsourcing plan.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, participants should:
- understand the global nature of the electronics industry and how products are taken from research and development through to the customer;
- understand different roles in typical companies;
- appreciate the wide range of career options open to electronic engineers;
- understand the importance of self managing their time and resources effectively;
- demonstrate the ability to clearly express ideas concisely in writing.


Syllabus

- Overview of the global Electronics Industry. Company types and Industry Sectors.
- The Production Cycle: Systems, subsystems, components, assembly, quality, sales, distribution, supporting activities.
- Personality types and roles in the workplace.
- Personal development, writing a CV, the recruitment process.
- Entrepreneurship in electronic engineering.
- Working in Industry.
- Exemplar case studies; Company Profiles and practicing Engineers.


Students are expected to attend a number of Faculty of Engineering seminars in order to further explore the range of industry sectors relevant to Engineers. They are also expected to read regularly from a wide range of learned society magazines to study developments in Engineering related to the dissertation.

Private study

- Reading technical and learned society magazines and journals.
- Attending seminars.
- Researching and evaluating the literature in the agreed topic.
- Compiling the Dissertation.
