Objectives

To carry out a detailed study of an emerging technology in electronic/electrical engineering, communications engineering, or a related discipline, from different business perspectives including the innovation management, supply chain management, and consumer perception aspects.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students should have an in-depth understanding of the business principles and commercial drivers which influence technology development and determine the success or otherwise of commercial technology ventures.

Syllabus

Students should identify a commercial technology challenge, which may be, for example: a single product innovation venture; a business development built around a core enabling technology; a fundamental change to an existing market caused by a disruptive technology, by resourcing issues, or by legislative changes; or the evolution of a high technology market in response to economic, cultural or other shifts.
Students should collect relevant data on both the technical and business aspects of their study, e.g., market statistics and specific case studies. Relevant legislation, including intellectual property law, contract law, standards and environmental laws, should be considered.
The final reporting of the project should demonstrate that academic principles from both engineering and business have been applied to the study; that a sufficiently comprehensive and unbiased set of data has been collected; that the analysis of data has been objective; and that this analysis has resulted in a clear set of conclusions.
