Module summary

This module is for students who already have a basic knowledge of the language and wish to take their Mandarin to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a practical level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) while developing greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a limited range of situations. The module also aims to stimulate students' interest in China and deepen their knowledge and understanding of Chinese society and some of the major cultural and linguistic differences.

Objectives

With their beginners' competence in Mandarin, students taking this module should be able to build on their existing knowledge of the language and develop their ability to function in Mandarin. They should also develop their awareness of Chinese culture and be able to advise a friend on how to avoid major social, cultural and linguistic faux pas when speaking Mandarin and/or when in China.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of commonly used instructions, commands and expressions;
- read short texts in Mandarin;
- extract accurately the key information from audio and/or video material;
- handle short conversations in a familiar context;
- make themselves understood by a sympathetic native speaker;
- demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Mandarin and English;
- understand the rules of writing Chinese characters, write a limited number of words using the characters introduced in the module and produce short pieces of independent writing;
- demonstrate their knowledge of key areas of grammar.

The module covers topics such as:
1. Understand and give common instructions and commands
2. Understand and put into practice the rules of writing Chinese characters
3. Review of talking about oneself and others
4. Reporting and describing lost property
5. Hobbies and interests
6. Arranging to meet, accepting and declining invitations
7. Making a complaint
8. Making phone calls
9. Talking about one's education and job

Private study

Guided independent study each week including homework, review of the lesson as well as preparation and practice for the weekly classes, the assessments and the final exam.
