Pre-requisite qualifications

A minimum of two years of a medical degree, preferably three or an equivalent undergraduate medical programme, or BChD undergraduate dentistry programme.

Objectives

- To give an overview of the organisation and nature of healthcare systems in the UK.
- To explore the nature of UK health systems in all sectors through international comparisons across a range of countries.
- To explore the principles of UK health care systems in community, primary and secondary care settings, and how these are supported through health information systems and educational programmes.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:

Overview of health systems:
- be able to describe the history of the development of UK health systems, particularly the NHS, and explore future health care in the UK;
- understand about primary care, public health & community based healthcare and how these sit within the UK health care framework;
- be able to compare critically UK health systems with other European, North American, Australasian & other examples;
- be able to critically compare UK health systems with common models from low and middle income countries.

Healthcare principles & practices:
- have explored principles of health promotion and disease prevention within health care systems;
- have explored the way acute illnesses present, are diagnosed and managed in the UK health systems;
- demonstrate the way chronic disease is managed in UK health systems;
- consider principles and practice of quality assurance in healthcare.

Health Informatics:
- have explored electronic, patient held and shared clinical record systems in use within UK primary care;
- consider the range of IT systems and clinical support available to health care planners and practitioners in the UK.

Medical Education:
- have explored how medical education is structured in the UK, and with international comparators, and how it is designed to support developments in health systems;
- explore workforce planning in UK health systems , and how clinical & medical education works to support this at all levels.

Future:
- have explored future scenarios and models of UK health care, with references to current NHS and other healthcare legislation
- consider the challenge of developing health care systems in line with governmental environmental targets including carbon reduction;
- have explored ideas and solutions for sustainable health systems.

Skills outcomes
Students will enhance their ability to critique written and verbally presented information, to debate and reason and to explore and synthesise complex issues in healthcare.


Syllabus

Module teaching will be divided roughly into 8 seminars, each with appropriate background reading (core & optional), on line materials and practical preparation from health care placements.

These core areas on the curriculum are:

Overview of health systems (S1)
- know about the history of the development of UK health systems, particularly the NHS, and explore future health care in the UK;
- understand about primary care, public health & community based healthcare and how these sit within the UK health care framework.

An international perspective (S2)
- be able to compare critically UK health systems with other European, North American, Australasian & other examples;
- be able to critically compare UK health systems with common models from low and middle income countries.

Healthcare principles & practices (S3 &4)
- have explored principles of health promotion and disease prevention within health care systems;
- have explored the way acute illnesses present, are diagnosed and managed in the UK health systems;
- understand the way chronic disease is managed in UK health systems;
- understand principles and practice of quality assurance in healthcare.

Health Informatics (S 5 – and within S8 below)

Medical Education (S 6- and within S8 below)
- have explored how medical education is structured in the UK, and with international comparators, and how it is designed to support developments in health systems;

Health system futures (S 7&8)
- have explored future scenarios and models of UK health care, with references to current NHS and other healthcare legislation;
- explore health informatics futures;
- explore educational challenges to support future health care;
- understand the challenge of developing health care systems in line with governmental environmental targets including carbon reduction;
- have explored ideas and solutions for sustainable health systems.
