Module summary

The module will focus on the development of self-awareness and the application of leadership and management practices within health andsocial care, from international theory and use through to application of critical understanding within international contexts.The student is expected to engage in a project identifying possible solutions to scenario based practical challenges and based on the learningfrom that, develop his or her skills in a way that supports effective leadership/management.The module will specifically enhance communication and people management skills, group working and partnership working, and thedevelopment of self-awareness and self-management capacity.Using a variety of teaching and learning methods the participants will have the opportunity to :- explore personal management and leadership practice and devise an action plan to enhance effectiveness in a variety of contexts andsituations- learn the theoretical underpinnings of a range of leadership and management practices,- discuss strengths and weaknesses of given practice skills,-explicitly develop plans for future leadership and management practices and development.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Critically analyse a range of leadership and management self assessment tools in current use internationally.
2. Evidence a critical understanding of self as a leader and/or manager within differing situations and international health and social care
contexts.
3. Analyse the international evidence base for interpersonal skills competence in leadership and management roles.
4. Understand and demonstrate leadership and management competence across a range of challenging situations.
5. Critically analyse the challenges of leading and managing multi-agency teams across national and international cultures.
6. Undertake a self defined leadership and management skills audit and formulate a plan for future practice development.

Learning outcomes
This module aims to provide students with a thorough grounding in the practical aspects of leadership and management based on international evidence, and the opportunity to develop, practice and evaluate their skills in the leader/manager role.

Skills outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Utilise the outcomes of leadership feedback to plan for personal and professional development
2. Analyse their own effectiveness, and the effectiveness of others in the Leader/manager role
3. Critically analyse leadership/management practices within complex organisations and relationships
4. Utilise a broad range of skills to accomplish goals and to influence others


Syllabus

Students will:
- Critically explore international theories and models of leadership and management practice, compare and contrast examples of the
international use of these theories, and critically apply learning to students' own contexts;
- Demonstrate understanding of international leadership and management practice through personal, behavioural, functional domains and
competency based approaches;
- Critique international leadership and management assessment tools;
- Develop understanding of practices associated with effective leadership and management within the context of complex social, political and
economic health and social care organisations including:
> Identifying and analysing factors external to the organisation that affect the culture and practices within the organisation;
> Analysing the impact of organisational culture and governance practices on leadership and management effectiveness;
> Managing organisational politics for the achievement of organisational and personal goals.
- Develop understanding of leadership and management practices that support effective performance work teams and groups including:
> Developing management systems that effectively support individual and group accountability and responsibility;
> Communication of sensitive political and performance information;
> Managing conflict;
> Coaching and motivating teams and individuals.
