Objectives

- To develop a workable research question;
- Undertake a relevant literature search;
- To plan the research and a coherent and logical essay structure;
- To write a substantial essay displaying critical analysis.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
a) identify factors which render a topic suitable for development into a twelve thousand word dissertation;
b) formulate a focused and workable research question;
c) undertake a substantial and advanced literature search involving both I.T. and hard copy data resources;
d) undertake sustained independent research relevant to their research question;
e) practise research skills including the skills of:- Accessing and retrieving relevant information, Analysing and criticising relevant information, Presenting and communicating effectively the product of independent research;
f) research a substantial topic and present the data in a clear and readable manner;
g) demonstrate the development of a deeper understanding of a specific topic in Criminal Justice Studies through independent research and the preparation of an extended piece of writing;
h demonstrate an ability to plan for a substantial project which will involve one-third of the candidate's credits for the year;
i) demonstrate, through the writing of their dissertation, a critical awareness and understanding of the position and role of Criminal Justice Studies within one or more of it's social, economic, political, policy, historical, philosophical, moral, ethical or cultural contexts.


Syllabus

The module involves the writing of a dissertation on a selected criminal justice topic of 12,000 words (excluding bibliography and footnotes) plus a 250 word abstract.

Private study

Supervision of research and writing by the student's supervisor. Students are entitled to 10 hours of supervisor time, including at least 2 hours face-to-face.
