Module summary
What is policing, who is involved in its arrangement and delivery, and how is it regulated and governed? This module aims to describe policing institutions and operations in the UK with reference to their legal, political, social and cultural implications. The topics covered include: - History and structures of policing including the development of an 'extended police family' which comprises (amongst others) Police Community Support Officers and private security guards; - Functions and cultures of contemporary policing; - The use of police powers (to stop, search, arrest and detain), and how officers are held accountable including the police complaints systems; - Police institutional accountability at both micro and macro levels; - Private security and its accountability; - The accountability of policing in a global context. This module is taught by lectures and seminars in semesters 1 and 2. Assessment is by coursework (a 2,000 word policy report) and a two-hour examination.Objectives
1. To describe policing institutions and their operations with reference to their legal, political, social and cultural implications.2. To develop an understanding of policing and its accountability in both the UK and in a more global context.
3. To enable students to develop analytical and research and communications skills with reference to policing issues.
