Module summary

This module is designed to enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of teams and how different styles of leadership affect the experience and outcomes of participating in a variety of outdoor adventurous activities.Designated a Special Skills module, this module is open to students in all degree programmes.Information about the full portfolio of LEED discovery modules can be found at https://sport.leeds.ac.uk/modules/

Objectives

Students will gain the knowledge of leadership styles, an understanding of teams and be able to relate these to participation in adventurous outdoor activities.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should;
- Understand the role and practices of a competent outdoor leader;
- Understand the individual responsibilities of participation in adventure sports;
- Have the relevant knowledge to participate safely in various adventurous activities;
- Have an understanding of the personal equipment and clothing required to protect him/her self whilst participating;
- Understand the structure and organisation of the National Governing Body of one activity and its role in the development of that activity.

Skills outcomes
By taking this module students will develop skills in and understanding of: -
- Teams and team role
- Leadership styles


Syllabus

- A study of equipment, clothing and any rules and regulations appropriate and necessary for the activities.

- Theory and practical sessions in facilitating, organising and participating in a variety of activities.

- The structure, organisation, role & responsibilities of one National Governing Body of choice plus their training, coaching and assessment schemes.

- Complete a Log Book, documenting and reflecting on their progress through the module, together with evaluations of the sessions and identification of strategies to improve learning.

- Principles behind leadership and teams with a particular focus on adventure sports.

- Introduction to the process of reflection and how to write a reflective report/log.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance at lectures and practical sessions.
Mid module monitoring of Log Book.
Registers of attendance at practical classes and lectures will be kept, with absences followed up by the module manager.
Tutorials will form the basis of action planning and monitoring of the Reflective Log Book.
