Module summary

This module offers a unique chance to learn the skills of a new sport or activity, to learn about your own style of learning and to apply this to another of your academic modules. Currently there is a range of individual sports or activities from which you can choose including badminton, canoeing/kayaking, multi outdoor activities, rock climbing, squash, table tennis and tennis. You must be a novice or complete beginner in the activity you choose.After enrolment you should then email LEEDmodules@leeds.ac.uk with your first and second choice of activity. Your timetable with then be updated accordingly.Information about the full portfolio of LEED discovery modules can be found at https://sport.leeds.ac.uk/modules/

Objectives

Students will understand and apply a range of different styles of learning. In particular, the one that is most suited to them and how this can be used in the approach and application to other aspects of their academic studies and personal lives.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students should:
- Be able to reflect on their participation in the sport/activity and apply the learning to other areas of their academic studies and lives;
- Analyse a variety of learning styles and the application of them as an individual learning a new sport /activity, and more widely in terms of personal development;
- Be able to set, check, challenge and amend goals and targets;
- Have an understanding of skill acquisition;
- Have an understanding of risk assessment and its practical application;
- Have progressed from a learner/beginner to an intermediate/above novice participant for that sport/activity.

Skills outcomes
Students will gain skills in their chosen sport, as well as key employable skills through the core teaching element and analysis of their sporting activity.


Syllabus

- The theory underpinning skill acquisition, goal setting and learning styles.
- Understanding the risk assessment process, calculating risk and how reduction methods are applied.
- Introduction to goal setting and its wider application to different contexts.
- The structure, organisation, role & responsibilities of the National Governing Body(s) of choice, their training, coaching and assessment schemes to be able to set realistic goals & target set for the level of ability aimed for.
- A range of team and individual sports/activities will be available, dependent on group interest and resources.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Individual tutorials where progression will be discussed and advice provided.
Attendance at lectures, tutorials & practical sessions with absence follow up.
Students will be provided with feedback forms at the completion of the module for formative feedback. A selection of students will meet with external examiners to provide feedback.
