Module summary

This module is designed to enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of research and analysis of data in an area normally different from their main degree subject. Designated a Special Skills module, this module is open to students in level 3 across all degree programmes.

Objectives

Students will gain the knowledge of;
- research;
- data collection and analysis;
- a deeper understanding of issues in the particular topic/area studied.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to;
- apply and develop knowledge and skills gained from previous levels;
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding as a consequence of investigative self led learning;
- work independently and/or through collaboration to design and execute a piece of research in the area of sport and physical activity;
- write a report on a piece of research in the area of sport and/or physical activity;
- demonstrate good analytical skills.

Syllabus

Students will select/develop a working research project in consultation with staff. The title will then be approved by the supervisor and module manager.
- The supervisor will be responsible for overseeing the work in an advisory capacity, but the students will be expected to plan, execute and interpret their own work.
- Projects may be individual or group, insofar as the collection of data may be collaborative, but individual students will use the data to address differing project titles

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Weekly monitoring of the Project Development Report/Log, which will form the basis of the research project.

Registers of attendance at lectures, seminars and individual tutorials kept, with absences followed up by the research supervisor and/or module manager.
