Module summary

This module offers a unique chance to learn about some of the aspects needed to be considered when engaging in a variety of higher risk adventure sports and will enable students to make informed decisions regarding the actual rather than the perceived risks of understand the limitations of participation.Information about the full portfolio of LEED discovery modules can be found at https://sport.leeds.ac.uk/modules/

Objectives

Students will have an understanding of;
- how generic aspects can be applied in and to specific adventure sports contexts in order to improve the safety and enjoyment of the participants when taking part either as an individual or as an instructed activity.
- the applicability/use/dilemma of the above when taking part in some of the following adventure sports: -
caving and pot holing, fell walking/running, hang gliding, inland and sea kayaking/canoeing, mountain biking, mountaineering, orienteering, paragliding, rock climbing, sailing, skiing and wind surfing, or any other identified adventure sports.
- the manufacturing side of some of the equipment used in at least one of the above activities.
- Have practised their individual and group presentation skills and understand how to improve these.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate understanding of;
- the ‘Conformité Européenne" (CE) marks for Person Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Physiological & psychological aspects of survival
- Risk assessment
- The weather
- Development of clothing & equipment
- the applicability/use/dilemma of the above when taking part in some of the following adventure sports; caving and pot holing, fell walking/running, hang gliding, inland and sea kayaking/canoeing, mountain biking, mountaineering, orienteering, paragliding, rock climbing, sailing, skiing and wind surfing, or any other identified adventure sports.
- have seen the manufacturing side of some of the equipment used in at least one of the above activities.
- have practised their individual and group presentation skills and understand how to improve these.
