Objectives

The purpose of the module is to :
- develop an awareness of equality and diversity in contemporary Britain
- develop knowledge of issues of social exclusion, poverty and the development of social policy
- explore key concepts in sociology
- understand the impact of globalisation on contemporary society

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will have a knowledge of:
- key theories, issues and debates within sociology and social policy
- critical awareness of diversity and issues of equality in contemporary society
- some of the relevant ethical issues and stances associated with debates in social policy
- key features of the impact of globalisation on contemporary society

- sociology and social policy relating to crime and deviance in contemporary society

Key concepts will be introduced in the taught sessions and students will be expected to carry out further reading and exercises on a weekly basis to develop & consolidate their knowledge & understanding.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module VLE and completion of formative assessment tasks. The Reflective Journal (APD Module) will also be accessed to monitor progress across modules on the programme.
