Objectives

This module will provide the medium by which students will develop core clinical competencies and underpinning knowledge required to enhance patient care provision. This knowledge and skill will be limited by a scope of practice and will be developed and applied under the direction or supervision of a registered practitioner.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
-Assume responsibility for delivery of delegated elements of health and social care which will be protocol based and undertake clinical work in domains that have previously only been within the remit of registered professionals.
-Undertake a specific range of tasks limited by the scope of practice under the direction or supervision of a registered practitioner within relevant legal and ethical frameworks and in accordance with organisational protocols and policies.
-Have the underpinning knowledge and assessed level of competence to undertake such a role.

Syllabus

This module will be predominantly work based learning. The module provides a framework which allows the student to achieve identified competencies. Mentors in practice will assess clinical competencies based on core skills identified by the employing NHS Trust. Students will produce a portfolio of evidence in support of their practice learning within which identified clinical competencies will be achieved (competencies workbook). The competency based workbook for Assistant Practitioner has been aligned to a number of different nationally recognised competency frameworks. The core competencies are based on National Occupational Standards (NOS) which are cross referenced to both Knowledge Skills Framework (KSF) and National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ). The core competencies are set at a level appropriate for an Assistant practitioner, which is Level 4 on the skills framework.

Private study

The modules on this programme are delivered by block teaching which distributes the teaching over a number of days/weeks using a combination of Lectures, Seminars, Workshops and Tutorials.
Private study time will be used to support achievement of the clinical competence workbook and in preparation for the summative assessments.

Student progress will be monitored a tripartite relationship – student / mentor / programme team.
