Module summary

This module will explore typical and atypical child development from a number of perspectives including relationships with the environment, family, culture and society. It will also consider the development of children’s and young people's resilience in relation to all of the above.

Objectives

- To analyse the spectrum of child development from typical to atypical
- To explore child development from a cognitive, social, cultural, emotional and physical perspective
- To evaluate basic theories in relation to the development of cognition, attachment, language and communication, managing risk and developing resilience

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module the student will be able to evaluate critically, and have knowledge of:
- Children and young people's physical development
- Children and young people's cognitive development
- Children and young people's social development
- Children and young people's language and communication development
- Children and young people's development from differing cultural perspectives
- Children and young people's development in relation to their environment and primary carers
- Theories of child development in relation to practice


Syllabus

- Typical and atypical child development including social, physical, cognitive and emotional development from 0-19
- External factors impacting on the developing child
- Understanding children’s and young people's responses to their environment
- Introduction of a range of relevant theories in relation to physical and cognitive development of children 0-19
- Opportunity to draw on ongoing work experience and to apply and test learning in the work setting

Private study

The student will be encouraged to use the online materials in the VLE and read appropriate texts, academic books and peer review articles to expand their learning. They will also be encouraged to reflect on their learning in the context of their own workplace.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module via student engagement in lecture and seminars, and via formative feedback on assignment drafts. There will also be tutorials to monitor progress. Access to tutors is always available via e-mail and telephone.
