Module summary
Using curricula with which participants are familiar, this module encourages critical analysis of their design and purposes, considering how they have been socially and politically constructed. Focusing on the decision-making processes and distinguishing between assessment methods and strategies, the significance of assessment strategies in designing and planning the curriculum will be considered.In examining the relationship between assessment and evaluation, it will incorporate issues of quality assurance and the idea of a curriculum development cycle.Objectives
By the end of this module, students will be able to:- demonstrate an awareness of the range of factors that influence the content and shape of the curriculum;
- demonstrate an awareness of the decision-making process in curriculum planning, delivery and evaluation;
- understand the social and cultural construction of curricula: credit and competence based systems;
- understand the range of purposes of curricula including inclusive education;
- understand key concepts and principles of assessment;
- understand and apply different types of assessment;
- understand the strengths and limitations/weaknesses of a range of assessment methods, including, as appropriate, those which exploit new and emerging technologies;
- understand the role of feedback and questioning in the assessment of learning;
- understand the importance of formal and informal assessment, and demonstrate developing skills in assessing learners;
- manage and support learning with individuals and/or groups to meet curriculum requirements and maximise learning and success;
- demonstrate ability to write and assess learning outcomes;
- understand and demonstrate how to give feedback to maximise learnerachievement;
- plan/design and conduct formal and informal assessment as a tool for learning and progression;
- understand how to plan, design and conduct evaluation to improve learner performance.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Through participation in classwork, and especially through work for assessment in seminars and feedback on progress of project and curriculum analysis.- The project will be submitted during the module, and feedback will contribute to informing the second piece of assessment which will be submitted at the end of the module.
