Objectives

The module will provide students with opportunities to:
-engage critically with social and biological theories of mental health;
-understand a range of mental health issues;
-understand and evaluate different therapeutic approaches;
-examine ethical issues associated with mental health including issues around attitudes within society and stigma.

Learning outcomes
Students will:

-understand ways in which mental health is conceptualised from social and biological perspectives;
-critically evaluate the significance and ethical implications of different concepts of mental health;
-understand some of the most commonly identified mental health issues;
-understand and consider the strengths and weaknesses of different interventions to improve mental health;
-discuss perceptions of mental health/illness in society and explore the prevalence of stigma and its effect on the individual/society;
-develop knowledge-based skills for work as an assistant practitioner with those with mental illness.

Skills outcomes
-ability to demonstrate empathy
-ability to exercise skills drawn from CBT and counselling


Syllabus

-social and biological concepts of mental health and illness and their working through in different interventions and treatments;
-discussion of specific mental health conditions and their treatment and management including:
-anxiety;
-depression;
-psychoses;
-phobias;
-challenging behaviours;
-eating disorders;
-drug and alcohol related conditions;
-self-harm and suicide;
-confusional states.
-skills and approaches for the assistant practitioner working with mental illness;
-issues of stigma and attitudes within society;
-ethical issues raised by concepts, attitudes and therapeutic approaches to mental health.
