Module summary

This module will recognise the developing role of support staff in working with parents/carers. It will also acknowledge the link between parental experience and education and commitment to their childrens education and attainment. It will suggest that specific personal skills can be developed by support staff to aid such work.

Objectives

- To recognize the impact of parents/carers social and cultural capital on children's attainment
- To recognize and take account of implicit and explicit power relations between educational services and parents/carers.
- To critically evaluate the resources, projects and support provided for parents/carers
- To recognize ethical dimensions and dilemmas in such work
- To develop skills and strategies in face-to face work with parents/carers

Private study

Students will research both evidence of the impact of parental involvement and specific projects for working with parents/carers. Problem solving and reflection tasks will be carried out weekly. Reading and research tasks also set

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be ongoing monitoring of students on a weekly basis by the module tutor. Students also have a personal tutor.
