Objectives

The module Commercial Banking aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the key theoretical and practical issues in retail banking. The module provides students with a thorough grounding in a range of commonly employed numerical tools, strategies and techniques in the day-to-day management of banks. By the end of the module the student will be knowledgeable on the main activities of retail banks, capable of recognizing common problems and applying the appropriate qualitative and quantitative tools to solve them.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to critically asses:
- theoretical principles of the role of commercial banks in modern financial systems as well as the role of financial institutions
- the core functions and activities of banks in the retail sector
- the basic principles of bank management and bank performance evaluation
- the various characteristics of the risks faced in commercial banking and the main techniques used to manage those risks

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Independently extract, synthesise, apply, and communicate complex concepts and methods

Subject specific
- Apply relevant theoretical and analytical tools to solve more advanced real world banking issues
- Apply core mathematical skills to address a range of topics in retail banking such as measuring risk and bank performance
