Objectives

This module aims to provide students with knowledge of key skills, training and human resource development issues through developing a critical awareness of the political, economic, labour market, social and cultural contexts in which workplace training and development initiatives reside. The module also highlights the nature of skill, the way this has changed and the significance of the international context and comparative training systems.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Understand the nature of skill and the impact on skill of workplace power dynamics
- Explain national training systems and policies with respect to vocational and non-vocational training
- Recognise the importance of training in enhancing competitive performance and supporting broader human resource management initiatives
- Identify and critically evaluate the complexities presented when introducing training initiatives at the workplace

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Apply cognitive skills of critical thinking, analysis and synthesis
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Prepare and deliver effective presentations.


Syllabus

Indicative content
The module starts by examining the nature of skill and the advantages and disadvantages of training and development for various stakeholders. It goes on to examine international skill systems, the ways the skills have changed and the rise of soft skills, managing culture, knowledge management, skills and flexibility, workplace learning, trade unions and skills and the links between skill and performance.
