Pre-requisite qualifications

Completed second undergraduate year in music or appropriate professional experience and/or demonstrable knowledge of music, and understanding of appropriate terminology, as appropriate to the relevant subject area.

You will not be able to enrol yourself onto this module. Please email music@leeds.ac.uk and your query will be referred to the appropriate member of staff. You will be asked to submit an outline study plan from which you will be assigned a supervisor and will be enrolled on the module.

Module summary

In negotiation with the appointed tutor, and other members of staff as appropriate, the student devises an independent project. Through one-on-one tutorials with a designated tutor and the chance to attend existing modules, as well as get access to their VLE materials, the student will be supported during the project. A statement of intent and learning contract is agreed with the tutor. The learning contract identifies key criteria appropriate to the nature of the project against which it will be assessed.This module allows students to pursue study in performance, ensemble performance, aesthetics, composition, analysis, notation and editing or music psychology, with the agreement of the staff members concerned. There are also specialist topics available as part of the Music in Context suite of modules. Please contact staff members for further advice before selecting this module. Please note that due to practical constraints, music technology is excluded from the options available.Assessment is by an essay or project equivalent to 5000-5500 words (75%), plus supporting elements (25%): a Statement of Intent and Learning Contract.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Devise, plan and execute a small-scale independent study project
- Identify appropriate methodologies and theoretical frameworks
- Locate and critique appropriate secondary sources, situating the project within its research contexts
- Work effectively with primary materials, as required by the terms of the project
- Identify key criteria against which the project is to be assessed
- Monitor progress against agreed project milestones

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will:
- demonstrate project management skills such as time management, devision and communication of project outcomes, goal-oriented working, flexibility, problem-solving skills, presentation skills, evaluation skills
- demonstrate the ability to work independently, including advanced self-evaluation skills, initiative and critical thinking
- demonstrate the ability to draw from previously learned and recently acquired knowledge, including contextual knowledge, research techniques, methodologies and applying of theories
- communicate findings and ideas in coherent and logical ways appropriate to the form of assessment
This module allows students to pursue study in performance, ensemble performance, aesthetics, music technology, composition, analysis, notation and editing or music psychology, with the agreement of the staff member concerned. There are also specialist topics available as part of the Music in Context suite of modules. (All of these topics are subject to availability.) Aside from the learning outcomes above, each area will have topic-specific learning outcomes.

Tutorials take place weekly for the first four weeks, and continue at the request of the student throughout the rest of the teaching period.

Private study

Devising, planning, discussing the project and producing statements of intent and learning contract: 75 hours
Researching and locating appropriate sources, online learning, private preparation, planning and executing the project, as appropriate for the discipline: 210 hours

Please note that the tutorial and lecture time specified is indicative and may differ depending on the subject area studied.

The number and type of classes will depend on the discipline concerned, and the level of classes attended, but there will be a mixture of plenary sessions, possibly some smaller seminars or discussion groups, and some tutorials.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The statement of intent and the learning contract will be agreed between the module leader, the student, and the specialist subject tutor. Students will receive feedback on this work in written and/or tutorial form. Specialist subject advice and help will be available from the subject tutor.
