Objectives

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

explore the different roles and functions of theatre practitioners across a selected range of performance themes and contexts, as well as key aspects of the theoretical perspectives that inform this range;
relate the key disciplines that are encompassed by the terms ‘theatre’ and ‘performance’ through a firm grasp of the significant concepts, practical competencies, creative processes and techniques associated with them;
collaborate with others in a programme of studio-based practical work, including taught sessions, workshop sessions, self-directed group work and/or rehearsals;
make practical connections between a selection of working processes, methods and techniques in the realisation of specific creative tasks for different performance contexts to an agreed form, timescale and schedule;
critically reflect on the creative processes under investigation and their performed outcomes with reference to appropriate theoretical frameworks.

Syllabus

Studio Practices is an introductory module delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, self-directed and private study time. Primarily studio-based, it aims to familiarise students with the basic concepts, processes and techniques that form the main points of focus for practice on the programme across all levels of study.
Through practical workshop exploration, a programme of individual reading and research as well as self-directed group work and/or rehearsals, students are introduced to the critical and practical tools, shared languages and working processes that will form the foundation of their creative practice to be developed during subsequent modules.
Part One of Studio Practices will refer to the concurrently running Performance Perspectives theoretical module. It will take three over-arching subject themes (‘Body’, ‘Space’ and ‘Time’, for example), presented theoretically in Perspectives, and explore each in two-week sections through various complementary modes of practice. These studio practices (they may, for example, take the form of writing, physical, applied and design approaches) will mobilise the over-arching themes, and each will be introduced by one of the four lectures.
In Part Two, students will form small groups and, with close tutorial supervision, work collaboratively, creating performance pieces involving various practices and two of the key themes combined. Reflection upon the performance-making process will take the written form of a critical evaluation. Tutorial guidance for both components will be included within the 4 hours per week student-tutor contact time.
