Module summary

Students will:- work closely with one designated supervisor on an extended research project which may, in addition to a conventional written dissertation, be practice-led or a piece of creative writing;- meet periodically with their peers to present on their progress and to defend their research process.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- devise, plan and execute an extended research project, the focus having been defined in negotiation with an approved supervisor;
- identify and make effective use of appropriate methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and source materials;
- construct a coherent extended written project, supported with appropriate evidence, displaying a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of that subject;
- display an understanding of the relationship between enquiry, evidence and interpretation appropriate to their programme of study;
- demonstrate a degree of intellectual confidence and independence of thought;
- present work to a high standard, in clear English and with appropriate scholarly apparatus.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to devise, plan, execute and evaluate an individually devised research study by one of the following as appropriate:
- written research project
- practice-led research plus complementary writing
- original creative work plus critical reflection.


Syllabus

Students will engage with the following as appropriate to the subject of the study:
- formulation of hypothesis
- design and possible applications of questionnaires, interviews and participant observation
- identification of appropriate media for the study
- selection of appropriate research methods and techniques to investigate the hypothesis and suit the students background/capabilities
- identification and review of relevant literature
- investigation of relationship between theory/practise
- completion of the study including identification of further areas for investigation
- the emerging area of practice as research in the field of the performance
- methodologies for practice-based research
- recording and communicating practice-based research outcomes
- methodologies for creativity and presenting original work.

Students will work on a title approved via the agreed mechanisms of the School under the guidance of a supervising tutor.

Private study

Private study will involve the surveying of appropriate literatures, empirical research, practice-led methodologies and creative writing depending on the nature of the project.

A large majority of the time will be related to the drafting of the 12,000 word thesis (or equivalent).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Monitoring of students' progress is begun by a negotiated Research Project proposal on a common School proforma and then through tutorials and through the viewing of 'draft' presentations to tutors and peers.
