Module summary

This module evaluates and critiques the contemporary relationship of culture to social and economic conditions in cities, regions, and nations through examination of selected case studies. It examines the relationships of cultural production to place and interrogates strategies pursued by localities and governments to promote culture.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to develop a critical knowledge of the relationship of culture to social and economic conditions through the examination of selected case studies

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- understand and critique key debates concerning the relationship of culture to social and economic conditions at different scales;
- examine and critique the political and ideological significance of culture within policy;
- apply this knowledge to selected case studies;
- present their analyses through verbal presentations and written essays.


Syllabus

The module introduces theories of the relationship of culture to social and economic conditions at different scales, most typically cities, regions, and nations. Through case studies that include primary research conducted by researchers in the School, students will analyse and interrogate the conditions of cultural production and place. Topics and debates to be considered in the module are:
- The cultural politics of the twenty-first century
- The future of the urban experience
- Culture and sustainability
- The rural dimension
- The politics of creativity
- Culture, place and branding
- Culture, development and diversity

Students are introduced to these topics through lectures and seminars supported by selected reading material.
