Module summaryThe module combines theoretical approaches to enterprise and consultancy with application to a specific situation in which students choose one of two options: (a) to develop a feasibility study for an existing or new creative venture or (b) to work in a small team to solve a strategic organisational or management problem or respond to an opportunity presented by a cultural organisation.
ObjectivesOn completion of this module, students should be able to develop, practice and demonstrate knowledge and skills of enterprise and consultancy in the context of a problem-solving scenario and/or opportunity recognition in the arts and cultural industries.
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Understand the variety of contexts in which creative enterprise and consultancy skills can be applied, either in individual practice or within organisations.
2. Understand and apply different theoretical and analytical approaches of consultancy and creative management to a cultural sector organisation.
3. Identify, understand, and apply enterprise and consultancy skills and knowledge to their own professional development and or/practice.
4. Understand and develop strategies for team-working and/or life-long learning through practice-based activities in the cultural sector.
The module combines theoretical approaches to enterprise and consultancy with application to a specific situation in which students either (a) develop a feasibility study for an existing or new creative venture or (b) work in a small team of three to solve a strategic organisational or management problem or respond to an opportunity presented by a cultural organisation.
The module enables students to develop knowledge of enterprise and management consultancy as applied within the cultural and creative industries, normally working outside the School and the University. Students may choose to work in a team which responds to a request-for-assistance brief by an external partner organisation (consultancy) or they may choose to work individually to develop a concept for a new or existing creative practice or venture.
Students will apply theories of cultural enterprise and/or arts consultancy and management to their chosen scenario. They will apply theories of experiential learning and action research to evaluate their own learning through practice.
Class session plan:
Session 1 – Introduction to the module. Definitions: What is enterprise? What is consultancy? Group discussion of student interests and plans for the module (2-hour seminar)
Session 2 – Lecture: Introduction to learning theories and experiential learning. Seminar: Understanding your learning style and preferences.
Session 3 – Seminar: Planning a creative venture. Steps in researching and writing a feasibility study. (2 hours)
Session 4 – Lecture: Approaches to consultancy practice. Seminar: Identifying opportunities for programme development and evaluation within an organisation.
Session 5 – Lecture (1 hour): Managing risk. Discussion of heath and safety considerations during project implementation. Second Lecture (1 hour) Ethical review and considerations during research and project implementation.
Sessions 6 & 7 -- Group tutorials for consultancy projects; individual tutorials for feasibility studies.
Session 8 – Verbal presentations to report results and preliminary reflections on experiential learning
