Module summary
This module is intended for students with Russian A Level or equivalent, and aims to prepare students who envisage a career as linguists or translators for similar modules at Levels 2 and 3 as well as equipping them with professional language skills for their future careers. The module is designed to develop the skills used in Core Russian 1 through the comprehension of longer reading texts in the form of a graded language reader in order to give access to a wider range of vocabulary and syntax, and introduce original Russian texts.In addition, the module will introduce the skills of précis and essay writing.Objectives
This module is designed to develop the skills used in Core Russian 1 in order to prepare students interested in professional language use for similar modules at Levels 2 and 3.A wide range of vocabulary and syntax will be developed through the use of a graded language reader, and the applied language skills of précis and essay writing will be the main exercises.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
- manage more linguistically challenging literary texts and show confidence and independence in dealing with unknown vocabulary and constructions
- demonstrate their understanding of original works by writing précis in accurate written Russian
- demonstrate an ability to write essays in Russian in a number of styles and registers
- demonstrate an extensive vocabulary on a range of topics.
Skills outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
- express their understanding of texts through the writing of précis
- demonstrate advanced reading skills
- demonstrate good time management skills
- demonstrate the ability to work independently.
Syllabus
The module will consist of two practical language classes weekly, covering reading practice, essay and précis writing, and improving understanding of authentic spoken Russian and communicative competency on a range of topics.
