This module is a Discovery Module under the Creating Sustainable Futures and Personal and Professional Development themes. It is open to all second year students

Module summary

On completion of this module, students will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and experience to establish, prepare for, undertake and reflect on a project based placement within a community host organisation.The skills students will develop in this module map onto many of the higher level Leeds for Life skills such as creative problem solving, planning and organisation, independent working, research and professionalism. Enrolment for this module is by application only as places are strictly limited. Potential applicants should contact the Module Leader for an application form and should enrol for their second choice Discovery module(s) while their application is being determined. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in community engagement and have the relevent skills to be able to complete the module successfully.

Objectives

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to demonstrate:

1. The ability to design and complete a substantive piece of work within agreed resource constraints, in collaboration with a host organisation
2. Awareness of the role of research in contributing to the day to day workings of the host organisation and the broader community
3. An enhanced knowledge and awareness of project management and stakeholder engagement
4. A good understanding of the practical application of legislation around Health and Safety and professional working
5. Improved communication and networking skills suited to working with a range of different stakeholders
6. Initiative and creativity in presenting ideas at an appropriate level and format for a non-academic audience
7. Reflective learning as a result of the placement, in particular with respect to how the experience relates to LfL skills developed, employability, University values and research themes

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will have developed and applied knowledge in the following areas:

- Project management
- Stakeholder engagement
- Workings of the host organisation and the relationship between host organisations, academia and the community
- Students will also have developed a detailed knowledge of a particular area addressed through their specific project with placement hosts.

Syllabus

Semester 1:

- Introduction to the module
- Introduction to community organisations
- Stakeholder engagement and networking
- Project management
- Ethics, health and safety
- Establishing a relationship with an external partner organisation
- Research of project partners and project theme/identifying project needs and resources
- Reflective learning

Semester two:

- Students carry out placement with host organisation (minimum 40 hours organised as appropriate over 11 weeks)
- Reflective blog updated fortnightly throughout the placement
- One tutorial in the middle of the semester to monitor progress

Students produce output in collaboration with the host organisation

Private study

30 hours: background reading for lectures and seminars (10 x 3 hours)
10 hours: research of organisations for networking workshop
20 hours: preparation of reflective blogs
20 hours: preparation of conference presentation to hosts, peers and academics
56 hours: preparation and completion of substantive output

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be able to get formative feedback through seminar discussions, the networking event and throughout their placement from their host organisation and the seminar in the middle of the placement.
