Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- understand the basics of stress, deformation & brittle failure in the upper crust;
- consider the influence of stress on rock strength & failure under conditions encountered in (un)conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs and in ore minerals systems that impact on fluid flow;
-understand different types of fault rocks and how their internal microstructure may either facilitate or retard fluid flow
- understand basic applications of stress analysis and fracture modelling to both hydrocarbons and ores formation and production
Syllabus
The course will cover:
- Conditions of deformation, Stress and Strain, Brittle shear failure including Mohr circle analysis, fracture mechanics, mechanics of faulting, stress and strain modelling.
- fault rocks and deformation at micro-scale.
- using MOVE to model stress and strain patterns around faults and to predict fracturing
