Module summary

Description The module is optional, but is open to all students on full-time programmes of study in the School of Earth and Environment: The work placement course is for students who wish to undertake a minimum period of 30 weeks work experience with a maximum of two employers in an arrangement approved by the University. To be approved, the job description must have a clear indication that the skills gained from the work experience of the placement are appropriate a student on a degree programme. These are outlined in the 7 key skills assessment criteria below. The professional placement will take place between the periods of level 2 and level 3 full-time university-based studies. The course effectively extends a three-year degree programme to a four year one, or four years to five – consequently the title of the degree is altered so that the existing named degree becomes BA/BSc (with Industrial Placement). The module will be assessed on the submission of a portfolio of skills with evidence. To pass the module you will be required to obtain a minimum mark of 40 for the portfolio. In the event of failure to pass the module, the student will revert to their original degree programme (i.e. not with Industrial Placement).

Objectives

The objective of this module is to provide work experience through an approved work placement. During the time with the employer the student will gain skills that are job specific in addition to generic employment skills. The structure and content of the placement may vary according to the requirements of the employer and/or student. The module will provide a means of monitoring the progress of the student during the industrial placement aspect of the programme.

Syllabus

An approved work placement of not less than 30 weeks with a suitable employer.

The student will:
- be expected to work within the industrial placement in a proper manner
- be expected toconduct fieldwork, laboratory work, produce reports, give presentations and read and write documents as required by the employer.
