Module summary

This module is designed to provide an overview of Spanish prose fiction and theatre from the Early-Modern period, the so-called Golden Age of Spanish letters, to the present day through the study of a range of emblematic and representative texts. Students will examine theoretical questions such as the different methodological challenges posed by studying novels as opposed to, say, play-texts originally designed to be performed rather than read; and, more generally, will consider why and how literary production is both constituted by and constitutive of the broader culture from which it emerges.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should:
1. Possess a wide-ranging knowledge of Spanish prose fiction and theatre from the seventeenth century to the present day.
2. Understand the various ways in which cultural production is shaped by, and engages with, the socio-historical context in which it is produced, and how material factors specific to each medium affect literary and theatrical creation.
3. Possess a comprehensive knowledge of a variety of literary terms and conceptual frameworks associated with the discipline, and be able to apply these critically in the analysis of prose fiction and theatre.
4. Demonstrate an advanced capacity for independent critical thought and the skills necessary to exercise this in seminar debate concerning particular primary sources, secondary materials and more general issues broached in class.
5. Be able to produce sophisticated and well-organised essays, using knowledge acquired in class and through independent reading, and addressing issues with reference to their specific historical and discursive contexts.
6. Feel more confident speaking Spanish in public, demonstrating an awareness of the importance of pronunciation and intonation in the production of meaning.

Learning outcomes
This module will enable students to explore a variety of literary and theatrical writings in Spain of the last four hundred years. Students will contextualise these with respect to issues common to Hispanic cultural studies as a discipline (power and resistance, nation, and identity politics) and learn about the specific scholarly debates which surround the chosen titles, their authors, and generic trends of the time period concerned.

Reading for each fortnightly slot: 7 x 9 = 63 (+ 6 hours for extra lecture and language-related class in Sem 2, week 5) = 69

Preparation and writing of 2000-word essay = 40 hours

Preparation of 20-minute group seminar presentation or 15-minute performance of scene from play = 20 hours (both in Spanish)
