Module summary

This module gives students the opportunity to study in-depth four important works of modern Brazilian fiction and their filmic adaptations. Students will both analyse these texts within the socio-political and cultural context in which they were produced, and consider the relationship between the written and screen versions of the texts.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be familiar with a number of key cultural contexts and debates in Brazil from the 1930s to the 1990s, including the neo-realist regionalist movement, cinema novo, political dictatorship and censorship and post-modernism.

They should be able to discuss both written and filmic works of fiction in a language appropriate to both and develop clear and coherent arguments in the application of theory to text or film.

They will be expected to produce well-organised and logically structured essays, contextualise (place within a broad framework) the questions being addressed, develop the capacity for critical reflection and judgement in the light of evidence and argument, assess critically the ability to engage with and interpret layers of meaning within texts and films.

Skills outcomes
Students are expected to consolidate the cognitive and practical skills acquired in Levels 1 and 2, and in addition to:
- produce well-organised and logically structured essays;
- contextualise (place within a broad framework) the questions being addressed;
- develop the capacity for critical reflection and judgement in the light of evidence and argument;
- draw evidence from a wide range of sources in support of an argument;
- be able to initiate and sustain independent debate (and in oral presentations, discussion).

This module combines the in-depth study of important works of modern Brazilian fiction and feature films, with a view to:
a) analysing these texts within the socio-political and cultural context in which they were produced, and
b) analysing the relationship between the written and screen versions of the texts.
