Module summaryThis module examines the relatively recent phenomenon of immigration in Spain, and the problematic issues of ethnicity and 'whiteness'. Particular attention will be paid to the way that these matters have played out in the performing arts, not only in the form of immigration as a narrative theme, but also in the activities of the increasing numbers of performers born outside Spain who work in the music, theatre, film and television industries.
ObjectivesOn completion of this module, students should:
1. Possess a wide-ranging knowledge of immigration in contemporary Spain with reference to this phenomenon elsewhere in Europe and in the context of the movement of peoples to, from and within the Iberian peninsula in centuries past.
2. Possess a thorough understanding of a variety of theories of nation, race and ethnicity; and be able to apply these theories to the particular case of Spain in order to facilitate a greater awareness of immigration and nation there.
3. Be able to use diverse methodological frameworks and theoretical concepts in the analysis of performances of various kinds.
4. Be acquainted with the most recent academic research in the areas above.
5. Demonstrate an advanced capacity for independent critical thought and the skills necessary to exercise this in sustained debate, specifically as regards immigration, race, ethnicity and the performing arts in Spain.
6. Be able to produce sophisticated and well-organised essays, using knowledge acquired in class and through independent reading, and addressing issues with reference to their specific historical and discursive contexts.
Knowledge of immigration in contemporary Spain includes: the timescale on which this has happened; the principal countries from which people emigrate to Spain, their destinations and professions; the national and international causes of immigration to Spain; the legal framework regulating the residence and employment of immigrants; questions of integration and multiculturalism; and the political and media discourse on this development.
Knowledge of performance in contemporary Spain includes: immigration and ethnic diversity as narrative features; representation of the body on stage and screen; Spain as a particularly unique case as regards intersections of nation, ethnicity and race; performance as a means of self-expression and self-representation.
