Module summary

The field of textile research is an extensive and constantly evolving area and presents a multitude of opportunities that can be addressed with fundamental and applied research. This module provide students with the opportunity to investigate a subject area of relevance to their programme of study. The focus will be on independent research.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are:
-To enhance your expertise in the chosen specialised stream through research.
-To understand the research process and identify the necessary knowledge involved in undertaking, planning and conducting your own independent research;
-To produce a time management plan and in conjunction evaluate the stages of undertaking research and the time frame requirements for each stage;
-With the aid and consultation of a supervisor, develop and identify a range of personnel development plans which will complement your chosen course of research.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be:
- able to demonstrate the ability to undertake a research investigation within the textiles sector or a related area
- capable of producing a critical review of literature and analysing quantitative/qualitative information
- capable of establishing appropriate research objectives, analytical methods and/or experimental methods and discussion of results
- able to produce a written dissertation which provides a detailed, clear and concise report of the research investigation undertaken and critical evaluation of the observations.

Syllabus

The module provides students with the opportunity to investigate a subject area of relevance to their programme of study.

The student will select an area of investigation in Semester 1, after consultation with a supervisor. Guidelines on the format of the written dissertation (including e.g. suggestions on structure and systems of referencing) will be given in Semester 1.

The student will identify the specific topic and provisional title, and produce an outline plan and the methodology to be used during their dissertation research together with a list of key references. The research may involve experimental work or a desk-based (review) study.

The proposal for the intended investigative study will be submitted to the supervisor at the beginning of Semester 2 in written form. The emphasis will be on independent study. After the planning stage the student will undertake an investigative study and will produce a written account of their work in the form of a dissertation.

Students will also be expected to present their work in a seminar. Dissertations will be of no less than 8,000 words.

Accompanying illustrative material should be included in any suitable format agreed after consultation with the supervising tutor.

Private study

- Library search and selection of topic: 70 hours
- Identification and critical review of background literature and other sources: 75 hours
- Preparation of research plan: 70 hours
- Experimentation, testing, data generation, statistical analysis (where appropriate), formulation of research findings and conclusions: 245 hours;
- Drafting of dissertation (and, where appropriate, illustrative material) produced. Final draft produced and submitted, after consultation with the relevant supervisor: 120 hours.

- Submission of a research proposal and literature survey at the beginning of semester 2
- Regular supervisory meetings in Semesters 1, 2 and during the summer.
