Module summary

This module will introduce technical terms and operating principles of textile process technologies. The field of textile technology and nonwovens are constantly evolving and present opportunities that can be addressed with innovation. The use of textiles is not only prevalent in clothing industry but also in the field of fast evolving technical and medical textiles. This module will introduce students to different production processes of textiles and nonwovens. Moreover, this module will impart strategic thinking and introduce professional skills as required to identifying appropriate textile material structures for new product development.

Objectives

To introduce technical terms and operating principles of textile process technologies:
- Fibre and yarn spinning
- Fabric Production
-The production of nonwoven materials
-Textile Testing

Learning outcomes
On completion students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- Develop an understanding of fibre and yarn spinning
- Develop an understanding of fabric production
- Develop an understanding of nonwoven manufacturing techniques
- Develop an understanding of textile testing
- Develop critical thinking ability required for new developments in the area of textile manufacturing.

Skills outcomes
Understanding of fibre spinning, yarn spinning, fabric formation, nonwoven technology, textile testing, and sustainability.


Syllabus

- The conversion of fibres to yarns: raw material preparation; basic principles of carding, drawing, roving production, ring and rotor spinning.
- The conversion of yarns to woven fabrics: yarn preparation; basic principles of weaving; essential features and principles of operation of traditional and modern looms; a review of elementary woven structures.
- The conversion of yarns to knitted fabrics: basic principles of knitting; essential features and principles of operation of knitting machines; a review of elementary knitted structures.
- The production of nonwoven materials: an introduction to nonwovens (including terms and definitions); methods of web formation; methods of bonding.
