Module summary
It is expected that the graduates from this MSc programme will go on to become involved in consultancy and project management in the area of textiles in the future. This module will prepare them to consider all the main factors which will affect the success of projects and the professionalism expected of the consultant. They will learn to explore the sources of raw materials , the appropriateness of technology(ies), the management and operation of the project, sources of finance, market opportunities, political and societal issues and the quality of management and operatives available to the project. These and many other important issues will be explored and the students will be expected to produce a professional feasibility study for given project situations and contingencies.Objectives
- To prepare the students to take on textile projects (small, medium and large scale) and to have a full understanding of the importance of good project management skills.- To enable the students to produce a feasibility study of at a professional level.
- To discuss the various societal, political and financial issues which have to be explored and understood when operating in different countries.
- To enable students to understand how to make decisions on appropriate technology.
- To prepare students to achieve cultural assimilation, to the level required as quickly as possible/necessary.
- To enable students to understand the product development process and how to help the management and operatives of plant to carry out this so as to react to market changes.
Learning outcomes
On completion the students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- Understand how to prepare a professional feasibility study
- Understand private and cooperative management models.
- Make decisions on the choice of appropriate technology.
- Manage a textile project and consultancy in various countries throughout the world.
- Negotiate effectively with management of the commissioner(s) and/or their agents, suppliers, government bodies and local interested parties.
- Provide effective project management skills.
- Identify and apply national and international regulations (eg. Effluent disposal, air pollution, work policies).
Syllabus
- The role of the consultant. Introduction to the feasibility study. Client’s requirements.
- Case studies of previous consultancies (by staff of the School of Design).
- Private and cooperative management systems.
- Choice of appropriate technology(ies).
- Project management (CPM, PERT etc).
- Product development including design considerations.
- Political, social and infrastructure considerations including regulations.
- Preparation of professional feasibility study.
- Financial management, cash flow, gearings and economy fluctuations. regulations (eg. Effluent disposal, air pollution, work policies).
- Cultural awareness and assimilation.
- Risk assessment . Contracts and tenders.
