Module summaryRoad accidents is a cost of mobility. This cost is applicable to individuals, such as injuries, as well as to other road users, such as to reduced journey time reliability due to occurrence of road accidents. While accidents are unexpected events, there is established evidence indicating the causation between a range of factors and accident occurrence. This module covers problem identification and solution development, in terms of policy, engineering application, and evaluation, as well as the ISO standard for Road traffic safety (RTS) management systems.
ObjectivesThis module aims to
- Establish a sound understanding of road safety issues associated with different road environments and road user groups
- Deliver an understanding of how road safety management together with traffic management can meet community and organisational objectives
- Develop students ability to identify road accident patterns and apply appropriate solutions to tackling road safety issues.
On completion of the module the students will be able to:
- establish the contribution of different factors to accident causation;
- identify road safety issues in terms of road environments and user type;
- demonstrate data analytic skills;
- develop solutions for road safety issues;
- understand how effective management is a tool for identifying road safety objectives and delivering solutions;
- evaluate priorities of countermeasures;
- communicate issues and solutions to the audience.

Private studySufficient effort is expected for further reading after each lecture, as well as for seeking relevant literature and collating evidence across a range of sources for completing the coursework. Support to private study will be offered by face-to-face discussions, as well as by VLE forums.
Opportunities for Formative FeedbackStudents learning progress will be monitored by in-class responses and the process during the workshops as well as the group work associated with the field work. Students will be fully supported during the process of completing their coursework via a variety of channels including physical discussions as well as virtual environment (e.g. VLE forums, emails etc). Feedback on coursework performance will be provided assisting the students to understand weakness in the submitted work and suggesting ways that work can be improved.

There are two pieces of coursework: Coursework 1: this is a report completed by each individual student Coursework 2: this is a group work, consisting design of infrastructure, and presentation of the entire process to the class Re-sit of coursework 2 will be on an individual basis and capped at 50.
