Objectives

The key objectives of this module are to:

1. Introduce students to the history of photography.
2. To develop an understanding of its place within cultural discourses.
3. To develop strategies for reading photographic texts and the ability to offer critically and aesthetically informed critiques.
4. To introduce students to the principles of digital photography and to develop key technical skills in relation to the capture and postproduction of digital photographs.

Learning outcomes
The key knowledge outcomes are the ability to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of photographic history.
2. Contextualise and situate the photographic image.
3. Critically engage with photographic images using analytical strategies.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of digital photography.
5. Produce and edit digital images.

Skills outcomes
The key skills outcomes are the ability to read and historically situate photographic images and produce and edit digital photographs. They will form the basis of a body of skills required for subsequent photography modules. It will also develop an awareness of the links between practice, critical and historical study and encourage students to engage in reflective practice.

Private study

Throughout the course of this module students will be engaged in guided reading and
practice-based exercises, leading to two summatively assessed pieces of work.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be monitored via the formative and summative assessment process, receiving feedback at each stage. They will also be monitored via the tutorial and practical sessions as they develop their submissions.
