Pre-requisite qualifications

5 x GCSE passes grade "C" and above
2 "A" level passes (or the equivalent)
These must include English and Biology

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- outline the organisation of dentistry in the United Kngdom and the structure of the National Health Service
- understand the legal position of enrolled dental hygienists and enrolled dental therapists, including the types of work they are allowed to carry out and the areas they are permitted to work in, under the direction and written prescription of a registered dentist
- understand the conduct expected of an enrolled dental hygienist and an enrolled dental therapist and the kind of behaviour which may be regarded as misconduct
- understand and recognise the need to comply with the legal requirement for annual enrolment for dental hygienists and dental therapists in employment
- understand the importance for dental hygienists and dental therpaists in employment to have membership with relevant medical/dental protection agency
- understand the importance of a contract of employment
- understand the roles of the British Dental Hygienists' Association and the British Association of Dental Therapists
- appreciate fully the importance of continuing education, clinical audit and quality assurance programmes throughout a dental hygienist's and a dental therapist's working life
- describe in detail the Health and Safety regulations pertaining to dental practice
- understand the role of the dental hygienist and ot the dental therapists within the framework of the dental team.

Syllabus

- Broad spectrum of dental service providers within the United Kingdom and the role of the hygienist/therapist within the areas of the service.
- Function and remit of the General Dental Council, hygienists and therapists associations and medical and dental protection societies.
- Ethico-legal aspects of professional conduct and what is considered as negligence.
- Remit of the hygienists and therapist and the guidelines under which they must work in providing dental care
- Health and safety issues in relation to patient care, clinician and others in the dental team
- Set out a framework for continuing education, clinical audit and quality assurance.
