Pre-requisite qualifications

- Have basic ICT skills (to be able to use email, word processors and the WWW) and to be able to use computers routinely in their academic work.
- Independent facility in the use of ICT with appropriate technical support.

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should:
- have knowledge and capabilities which demonstrate a critical analysis and understanding of how ICT may be used to support language learning and teaching;
- understand the context in which the field of ICT for language learning and teaching is located including alternative perspectives and practices and their implications;
- be able to develop and apply novel approaches in the design and evaluation of materials for language learning and teaching with ICT;
- be able to undertake a small-scale research study in the field on language learning and teaching with ICT showing a command of the methodologies involved.

Syllabus

This module examines a variety of types of software and technology that may be be used for language teaching and learning and considers both practical and theoretical aspects. Participants will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through workshops, discussion and seminars.

Range of issues to be covered:
- Role play and communication.
- Approaches to writing with ICT.
- The world wide web as a source of authentic materials.
- Drills, exercises and games.
- Concordancing.
- Online and distance learning.
- Designing and planning for language learning/teaching with ICT.

Private study

- Private Study:
12 hours per session preparation for synchronous seminars and asynchronous discussion = 144 hours;
- Assignment preparation: 96 hours;
= Total 240 hours.

- Teaching:
The seminars are 12x2 hour synchronous seminars and
the on-line learning takes the form of 12x2 hour asynchronous discussions.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each participant will be expected to make a contribution of between 500-1,000 words per session, about a specific issue in the asynchronous discussion. Each person will be expected to contribute to the synchronous seminar.
