Module summary

Beginners French 10 credits is for students who have not previously studied French. The emphasis is on achieving a basic level of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing and an introduction to French culture. You may want to learn a new language, you may already have an interest in France or you may be planning to travel - whatever your reason, this module will equip you with some practical language skills and intercultural awareness. Please be aware that if you are interested in progressing to elementary level, you should take a 20-credit module in beginners French.

Objectives

This module aims to introduce students to the French language and gradually develop their ability to function at beginners' level. Students should develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary, understand the rules of pronunciation and have a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for that level. They should also develop an awareness of French culture.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of, and the ability to use, commonly used vocabulary and everyday expressions in the topics covered;
- extract accurately the key information from audio and/or video material;
- understand and make themselves understood by a sympathetic native speaker in specific contexts;
- demonstrate some awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of French and English;
- demonstrate a basic knowledge of grammar including the present tense, prepositions, adjectives, formation of the negative.


Syllabus

1. Exchange personal information about themselves, their family, their interests.
2. Understand and use numbers, the time, dates.
3. Understand and give simple descriptions including use of the comparative and superlative, sizes, colours.
4. Talk about likes and dislikes and food.
5. Talk about daily routine.
6. Understanding and giving simple directions.

Private study

- Guided independent study each week including homework.
