Module summary
This module will introduce you to one of the most commonly used GIS packages: ESRI's ArcGIS. You will learn how to use ArcGIS for mapping and spatial analysis of both vector and raster data. You will also learn about how to access environmental and socio-economic data from a variety of different sources.Objectives
The objectives of this module are to:Train students in the use of a proprietary GIS;
Introduce students to a variety of data sources and how to extract data from online databases
Provide skills in data entry, manipulation, analysis and mapping and to be able to use the basic spatial analysis techniques included in proprietary GIS to solve geographical problems;
Provide an appreciation of the differences between vector and raster models when used in application contexts.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module, students should have a good working knowledge of ArcGIS and be familiar with a number of online data sources. Students should be able to apply the skills and knowledge gained to solve geographical problems in a variety of application contexts.
Skills outcomes
- Generic C&IT skills
- GIS software
- Accessing data from various online providers
- Graphical display and manipulation
