Pre-requisite qualifications

Applicants should normally possess a honours degree in a relevant discipline, or a medical degree, and be working and teaching in primary health care. Other primary health care professionals with equivalent experience may be considered.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- demonstrate a critical understanding of educational theory;
- formulate learning objectives which are appropriate to the learner's situation;
- select and use appropriate methods to achieve these learning objectives;
- design, implement and evaluate a curriculum appropriate to the learner and the areas of study;
- demonstrate expertise in the communication skills required for undergraduate medical and dental education, and/or other teaching in a clinical setting.

Skills outcomes
Students will be able to demonstrate the application of skills and knowledge to their educational practice.


Syllabus

- The theory and practice of effective teaching methods
- Evaluation of learning and teaching
- Educational theory and practice: planning teaching, group teaching, one-to-one teaching, mentoring and pastoral care
- Teaching clinical method: history taking and examination, procedures, communication and consultation skills
- Advanced teaching skills: communication and consultation skills, teaching evidence-based practice and clinical decision making, creativity, the arts and innovation in teaching.
