Module summary
This course is designed to help you achieve success & higher grades in your undergraduate studies by developing your skills of analysis and evaluation of a subject. You will also learn to recognise the elements of an argument and to formulate your own sound arguments and write up those arguments as a piece of academic writing.Objectives

- the range of theories of learning and of learning styles
- the University's IT systems
- the elements of academic argument and critical analysis
- information searches
- the Harvard referencing system
- Blackboard

- a range of theories on reflective writing and activities in writing reflectively

Syllabus
Academic Development
Students will be:
- introduced to a range of learning theories and learning styles; and to theories on reflective writing;
- encouraged to explore the Universities resources and systems (Library, IT, VLE and other services) and use them to access and manage information;
- introduced to a variety of materials and methods designed to help them study effectively.
The following areas will be included:
- critical thinking and reflective writing
- referencing and plagiarism avoidance
- effective note-taking; basic data analysis
- and working with others through presentations, posters or podcasts.
Personal Development
Students will keep a PDP which will enable them to:
- reflect on their learning; audit their personal competences,
- identify competences required for their career progression.
