Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- identify a range of current issues relating to learning across all sectors of education and training, whether statutory or informal
- show familiarity with the origins and purposes of recent educational legislation
- demonstrate an understanding of the policy contexts of current issues
- recognise the diversity of political and theoretical perspectives on issues
- discuss the ideological bases of the identification and proposed resolution of current issues
- recognise the significance of social, cultural and political contexts of contemporary issues
- apply theoretical perspectives to learning issues in formal and/or non-formal, and national and/or international contexts
- analyse how one particular issue relates to a current learning initiative.

- Beliefs, values, perspectives and ideological frameworks for understanding learning
- On defining problems and issues
- Political perspectives on learning issues
- Philosophical positions and frameworks for analysis
- Social, cultural and post-modern perspectives:
- Globalisation of learning issues
- Application of perspectives and ideologies to a range of identified contemporary issues such as citizenship, diversity, social inclusion, disaffection, equality, sustainability, accountability, competence-based learning, work-based learning, information and computer technologies, media representation, and key skills.
- Complexities and contradictions in interpreting issue and making resolutions.
