Module summary

This module gives you an understanding of the nature of labour markets and labour market institutions and will enable you to apply these theories so as to account for various market labour market phenomena.Pre-requisite qualifications: LUBS1940 Economics for Management OR LUBS1950 Economic Theory & Applications 1

Objectives

- To provide an introduction to theories of economic behaviour in the labour market
- To summarise and explain the empirical evidence on these theories
- To provide a description of the UK labour market and an analysis of recent policy in the light of this theory and evidence
- Apply core economic theory and economic reasoning to applied topics
- Discuss and analyse government policy
- Work with abstract concepts and in a context of generality
- Justify conclusions using economic arguments with appropriate rigour
- Communicate effectively and clearly in written formats

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the economic principles behind the operation of the labour market;
2. Analyse and evaluate relevant empirical evidence on the operation of the labour market;
3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of recent developments in the UK and global labour markets;
4. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of actual and proposed government policy towards the labour market.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Course members attend five seminars to support the schedule of 10 Lectures. Seminar questions are placed on the VLE in advance of meetings, and students are asked to prepare written responses to the questions in advance and are invited to submit them to the Lecturer at the end of seminars to gain written feedback. Course members are also invited to submit an un-assessed essay to gain essay writing practice and additional guidance on their performance in advance of the examination.
