Objectives

This module aims to provide students with the skills required to design and complete an independent research project, independently, in a specific area relating to the MSc International Business programme, making appropriate choices of research method and approach.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to assess and summarise:
- the core concepts of international business to the framing of a specific research project

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
Transferable
- Communicate complex information in a written format
- Define research questions, design and implement quantitative and/or qualitative research methods, analyse primary and secondary data and justify the selection of an appropriate research strategy

Subject Specific
- Critically engage with the current literature in the field of international business
- Be critical in applying core concepts, analytical tools and frameworks in an integrated manner across subjects to identify the dynamics and constraints of managing
- Take ownership of a significant independent project, managing all aspects, including engagement with the supervisor and any third party


Syllabus

The syllabus for this module is effectively the stages of the dissertation as a research study, and will vary depending on the nature of the research chosen, The stages will typically include a selection from the following:
- Dissertation topic definition
- Literature review
- Dissertation plan
- Identification of a conceptual framework
- Development of research questions and hypotheses/propositions
- Desk and secondary research
- Data collection
- Analysis of results
- Development of conclusions
- Suggestions for future research
- Writing up the dissertation

This module is the only compulsory-to-pass module on the MSc International Business programme.

Private study

Carrying out the research project 300 hrs. The module is extensively run via private study and is very much student driven. Students are expected to work full time on this over the summer months.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Monitoring will be done via the supervision discussions and the evaluation of final written work
