Objectives

This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to further develop understanding of organisations and their management within an integrated conceptual and empirical framework; develop critical understanding of relevant theoretical and empirical literature in a focused area relating to organisations and their management; and acquire and apply skills and knowledge to investigate a specific research question and hence demonstrate the potential to independently research. These are combined in a learning experience that is relevant to students’ personal needs and aspirations and contributes to future career and professional development.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module students will be able to:
- Analyse problems/opportunities occurring in the major functional areas of business and propose appropriate solutions; applying appropriate concepts, tools and techniques to critically analyse complex, cross-functional, business situations
- Generate insights and make decisions based on their analysis
- Define a research problem and design and implement an appropriate research strategy
- Critically engage with current literature in the field of business and management and communicate complex information in a written format

Skills outcomes
-Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Demonstrate effective application and synthesis of research, independent working and written communication skills in the context of a challenging individual research project


Syllabus

Identify, define and explore a management or business issue of more than day-to-day significance; develop and implement an appropriate methodology; gather, analyse and interpret relevant data, combine academic depth with an appreciation of relevant practical and business or management issues. The MSc Project is in many ways the culmination of the programme; hence it is positioned at the end of the programme. The project provides an opportunity to integrate, apply and further develop aspects learned in other parts of the programme.

Private study

Carrying out the research project: 300 hrs

This is broken down as follows:
1. Initial definition of topic in conjunction with Project Module Leader: 1 hour discussion; 9 hours independent learning/study.
2. Discussion and refinement of topic (as a case study) during Research Methods module: 10 hours discussion with Research Methods Module Leader; 15 hours independent learning/study.
3. Face-to-face project workshop with project supervisor: 5 hours discussion; 5 hours independent learning/study.
4. Carrying out project: 20 hours remote discussion with supervisor; 235 hours independent learning/study.

Total: 36 hours meetings and remote discussions with project supervisor/Project module leader/Research Methods module leader; 264 hours independent learning/study.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Monitoring will be done via the supervision discussions which will comprise of face to face discussions and remote discussions via telephone, email and virtual learning environment.

Further feedback will be provided via the evaluation of draft chapters of the written project report by the supervisor.

Dissertation will commence shortly before the start of the Research Methods module. The initial project outline will be developed further during the Research Methods module in preparation for the project execution period. The resit for this module will be 100% by 12,000 word Dissertation.
