Module summary

There is strong awareness that the new knowledge economy has arrived. Firms and management need to better appreciate how to exploit current and future technologies and how to evaluate and protect their intellectual capital assets, in order to extract maximum value from portfolios of intellectual property. This module will help you to recognize how these assets impact on business performance and to explain how they can be more effectively managed to optimise organisational performance.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of intellectual capital and intellectual property and how these key assets are best managed and commercialised by firms. Its focus is on how the successful management of intellectual capital portfolios impacts entrepreneurship, enterprise and performance and how effective (and ineffective) management of intellectual property affects business, both within and between countries.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to critically evaluate:
- Theories of intellectual capital and intellectual property management
- Concepts of value creation and extraction in an international context
- Debates on how to best describe, define, manage and report intellectual capital portfolios

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- Assess and utilise the core concepts and theories of intellectual property, intellectual capital and its management
- Distinguish the strategic and economic importance of intellectual capital to the modern corporation and in the global knowledge economy
- Explicate how the successful management of intellectual capital portfolios impacts entrepreneurship and enterprise, and the implications of this for business people and policy-makers
- Critically evaluate the impact of intangible assets and legal protections on organisational performance

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- Articulate in writing complex concepts and theories
- Arrange sophisticated frameworks and analytical tools to appraise the effectiveness of knowledge management practices in organisations
- Think strategically and be able to communicate these thoughts in a professional manner

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- Critically develop and communicate intellectual capital management practices and reporting strategies.
- Perform intellectual capital audits using established analytical techniques.
- Analyse the effectiveness of national and international intellectual property regimes and advise on their strategic implications


Syllabus

Indicative content:
- The commercial significance of patents, trademarks, trade names and copyrights as intellectual property rights (IPR)
- A brief history of IPR and the emergence of intellectual capitalism
- Fundamentals in the legal protection and enforcement of IP
- Cross-country comparisons of IPR rules, regulations, practices and impacts
- The role and significance of IPR for firm strategy, organisational form, the management of R&D and intra-firm technology transfers
- Strategies for managing and exploiting IP portfolios: licensing-in, licensing-out, strategic alliances, and how these arrangements are negotiated and managed
- How to audit and value a firm’s intellectual capital portfolio
- Controversies and concerns surrounding globalisation and intellectual capital: TRIPS, the WTO, and the impact of IPR on macro-economic development
