Module summary

This module gives students a theoretical and practical understanding of the work undertaken by consultants, by looking at the life cycle of consulting projects through sales, research, delivery and exit. The module will introduce you to the challenges of running your own consultancy and will explore the nature of the consulting career.

Objectives

This module provides students with a detailed, critical understanding of the challenges in organizing and managing in consultancy firms, and the different roles performed by management consultants for their clients. It looks at the nature of consulting work adopting a life cycle’ approach. It also offers an understanding of the consultancy career, and the challenges of setting up a consultancy.

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

- Formulate and describe the life cycle of consulting projects, specifically focusing on sales, research, delivery and exit
- Evaluate the practical application of management consulting in various business settings
- Discuss and critically evaluate perspectives on running a consultancy and the consultancy career

Private study

Students will be required to both prepare for the module and to undertake further research and study following the teaching period in order to complete their individual assignments.
Online learning will involve reading online cases, real life consultancy projects, and materials between lectures.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students’ progress will be monitored through their participation in seminars, and through a discussion (within seminars) of their plans for the assessed coursework. Feedback on the assessed coursework will help students to prepare for their final coursework assessment.
