Module summary

Objectives

This module aims to develop the student’s knowledge and skills to better enable them to identify, evaluate, synthesise and apply research knowledge to diagnose, structure and gain insight into a challenging management issue or problem. In support of the above, the module aims to improve ethical application of research-related skills. Students will design and complete a practical research project.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to critically evaluate:
- current theoretical frameworks and models
- different research philosophies and methodologies for investigating a management issue or problem that is of more than day-to-day significance

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:

- Communicate to an academic level in writing and through oral presentation
- Perform problem diagnostics and identify root causes and implement appropriate problem solving solutions

- Locate and critically evaluate research (both academic and practical) relevant to a specific issue or problem
- Identify and apply ethically appropriate data gathering and analysis skills

- stages in undertaking a research project

- designing and executing a research project
- searching and reviewing the literature
- data collection and analysis
- writing a research proposal and a dissertation

Private study

Students are expected to spend their private study undertaking activities such as preparing for lectures and seminars; and preparing for assessment. This will include activities such as completing assigned reading including text books, case studies, and other material available on-line.
However, a major compent of the student’s time will be devoted to identifying their research topic, designing the study, executing and writing it up.
The time allocation is approximately:
- 40 hours: 4 hours reading per lecture
- 15 hours: 3 hours reading per seminar
- 30 hours completing the project proposal assignment
- 185 completing the study and writing up the dissertation

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress in the early, taught part of the module is by self- and tutor assessment of progress within the seminar (workshops). The project proposal is assessed and written feedback provided to the student toward the end of the second semester. During the later phase of the module, typically across the summer months, the student receives guidance from the supervisor in supervisory sessions and specific feedback is provided on written work submitted by the student in advance of such supervisory sessions.
